Rooisering Park gates locked to minimise crime

“We received permission from Johannesburg City Parks to lock the park gates from 6pm to 6am. We’ve had numerous cases of neighbouring houses being broken into after criminals had gained access from the park. Drug-dealing inside the park is also a major problem.”

On 13 March the Panorama Residents Association (PRA) together with the Honeydew CPF held a short meeting where they unveiled the locking mechanism of the Rooisering Park gates in Weltevreden Park.

The park has four entrances – two in Rooisering Street, one in Albert Road and one in Kraalbessie Avenue.

PRA chairperson, Dave Baxter said, “We received permission from Johannesburg City Parks to lock the park gates from 6pm to 6am. We’ve had numerous cases of neighbouring houses being broken into after criminals had gained access from the park. Drug-dealing inside the park is also a major problem.”

According to Baxter, a special locking mechanism for the gates was devised and Beagle Watch Security will be holding the keys while monitoring the park on an everyday basis.

The park is currently under permanent lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but it remains under the watchful eye of Beagle Watch Security.

Dave confirmed that ‘safe zone’ signage will be put up at the park to indicate that the area is safe and secured.

Projects to enclose other areas are also being planned, depending on the residents association’s membership growth.
