Truck driver charged with reckless and negligent driving

Trucks with a total mass of five tons and above are prohibited from using the steep Doreen Road towards Ruimsig.

Traffic around the intersection of Hendrik Potgieter/ Doreen/ Peter Roads came to a standstill on Monday, 25 November following a horrific accident involving a four-ton truck and two motor vehicles.

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson, Superintendent Wayne Minnaar, confirmed that the mass of the truck that collided with the two cars was less than five tons.

Minnaar said, “A charge of reckless and negligent driving has been opened against the truck driver. The drivers of the two cars were injured, one of them seriously, and had to be rushed to hospital.”

In terms of JMPD regulations, trucks with a total mass of five tons and above are prohibited from using the steep Doreen Road, which meanders into Ruimsig across Hendrik Potgieter Road where it becomes Peter Road.
