Would you like a sunroof with that?

Car dealership sales personnel have mastered the art of offering car packages to prospective customers. What do these car packages offer?

Cars are like toys – if you like it, you’ll make it your own (just ask a child who changes their Barbie’s outfit several times a day). And once it’s your own, you’ll give it the best care and never look back!

If you’ve decided that it’s finally time for your beloved jalopy to retire, and you’re at your local car dealership, the next step isn’t necessarily choosing the car just the way it is and signing the papers. The salesman may hit you with an almost rhetorical question – “would you like improved sound with it?” The amount of optional extras now laid down as preferences with which you can add personality to your entry-level car is probably, at this point, dizzying.

Apparently it can be more economical to purchase these extra features in the form of a package… but what exactly do the various car packages mean? We break it down:

A performance (or sports) package may include go-faster options such as:

  • Better exhaust system (vroom, vroom!);
  • Turbocharger;
  • Better engine power and torque;
  • Larger gearbox; or
  • Body cosmetics to make the car’s appearance suit its performance – including a special badge, spoilers, bonnet airdam, etc.

A cold-weather package may include luxuries such as:

  • Headlight washers – lights that wash themselves for your safety… one less thing to worry about!
  • Climate control – nothing like a car with stable and comfortable temperature;
  • All-weather floor mats – so there’s no slipping when you get into and out of your car, and no dirt transfer to the upholstery during muddy season!
  • Heated seats to warm you up quick in the colder weather and keep you warmer for longer.

A cosmetic package may include options like:

  • Because the inside of your ride is just as important as the outside, you may have the option of going for leather upholstery;
  • Paint options: Choose a matte finish or a pearlescent glow – what will make your baby get noticed?
  • Going for a convertible? You may be able to choose between a hard- or soft-top roof!

This is a petrol-head’s ideal package!

When you’re organising your car insurance for your new car, remember to specify any non-standard factory-fitted accessories and extras that you added to your car – you may need to buy additional cover to ensure that your baby’s accessories are covered too.

Live your way by driving your car in style – personalise it according to your taste and insurance needs and you’ll always want to drive it – even if it’s just to buy a loaf of bread around the corner!
