According to a statement, the deceased offender was Thando Gazo, who was detained for interfering with police duties and defeating the ends of justice.

It was alleged that the deceased and his friend, Msizi Mamela, were arrested by two officers after they were involved in an accident on 20 October. It was further alleged that the deceased and his friend attacked the arresting officers, Constables RE Marumo and DG Makgotha, who then called for back-up. Constables ZB Twala and M Tshikosi subsequently came to their rescue. The four constables thereafter detained the deceased and his friend. Mamela has alleged that he and the deceased were assaulted at the scene as well as at the police station.

According to the report, Mamela was transferred to Randburg’s police cells while Gazo remained in the Honeydew holding cells, on the assumption that he was asleep. However, it was later discovered that he had died.

This is a developing story on which a follow-up will be provided as soon as more information becomes available.
