Workmen arrested for putting up illegal structures

Amelia reported on Facebook that five men were arrested after they confessed to be behind affixing of heavy steel structures to the Golf Club Terrace bridge in Constantia Kloof.

Almost a week after City of Johannesburg Ward 89 councillor, Amelia Bester, and the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Economic Development and Ward 97 councillor, Leah Knott, had opened a case of malicious damage to City-owned property, the suspects were arrested.

Amelia reported on Facebook that five men were arrested after they had confessed to be behind affixing heavy steel structures to the Golf Club Terrace bridge in Constantia Kloof.

JMPD confiscated the workers’ equipment and arrested them.

“Four workmen found on the bridge last night, along with the business owner who joined them later, were arrested for malicious damage to property. They confessed to be the crew who affixed the steel structures to the Golf Club Terrace bridge last week,” said Amelia.

She added that the culprits had planned to continue their work last night, but instead had their vehicle, generator, tools and other equipment confiscated.

“We had to open a separate case for the activities tonight, although the suspects confessed to affixing the steel structures to the bridge,” she said.

“As much as my colleague and I had a pleasant reporting experience with the police last week, I would not have been able to bring my complaint without JMPD’s assistance tonight. I was asked by a captain, for example, if I had taken fingerprints … and we were able to leave for home six hours later,” she explained.

She further thanked JMPD Superintendent Wandile Mrubata and BCI Security for assisting during the course of the arrest.
