Law enforcement impounds taxis amid route dispute

Reports at the scene suggest that three taxi associations are feuding over a route, with one association attempting to prevent another from using the route.

 

The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson, Superintendent Wayne Minnaar has confirmed that law enforcement agencies have been deployed on Hendrik Potgieter Road where taxi drivers attempted to block the road this morning, Tuesday, 15 October.

A large number of taxis and taxi drivers gathered at the intersection of Gordon and Hendrik Potgieter Roads and all the way to Hillfox near Clearwater Mall. Reports at the scene suggest that three taxi associations are feuding over a route, with one association attempting to prevent another from using the route.

Gauteng Traffic Department Principal Provincial Inspector, Mr Mahlelwe, who works under the Taxi Violence Task team, explained that they prevented taxis from blocking the road and impounded several taxis that were in contravention of their road permits.
