Local waste company initiates river clean-up

Just up the stream across Hendrik Potgieter Road there is another cause for worry about pollution to the river.

On Saturday, 5 October, Smart Waste conducted a clean-up of the Muldersdrift Se Loop River (Crocodile River) between Featherbrooke Estate and Cradlestone Mall.

This follows an incident where some employees of the waste company were photographed dumping rubbish near the river embankment, causing outrage among members of the local community.

The Northsider went back to the scene, accompanied by some Area Managers from the company, to inspect the area and confirm that it has been cleaned up.

Financial Manager, Toann Claassen said, “This river clean-up won’t be a once-off thing; we will be doing these clean-ups regularly to show that the company does care about the environment and that it’s our responsibility as a waste management and recycling company to assist. We are also planning to do some behavioural tests before we employ staff, to make sure that the previous incident does not repeat itself.”

Just up the stream across Hendrik Potgieter Road, there is another cause for worry about pollution to the river. The residents of the rapidly growing informal settlement near Cradlestone Mall have been observed washing their clothes in the river, in addition to dumping garbage into it.
