In the past, a first-time offender used to pay a fine of R3 000, but now it has been increased by a whopping R7 000.

“First-time offenders will be fined R10 000, second-time offenders R15 000, and those caught dumping illegally for the third time will pay R30 000,” Mrubata said.

When asked what happens when the offenders dumps for the fourth time, Mrubata said that they will impound the vehicle, “… and the owner will never get it back,” he warned.

“In each incident, we take the driver’s particulars at the scene, but we charge the owner of the vehicle because in most cases these vehicles belong to companies. When charged for the fourth time, we will take away the vehicle for good and auction it off at a later stage,” he explained.

To report illegal dumping, residents are urged to take clear photos showing the culprit, the vehicle and its registration number, and the waste dumped. Send the photos with the date, time and location via SMS or WhatsApp to 082 779 1361.
