New NGO restores children’s dignity

The packs consisted of bath soap, a towel, a toothbrush, toothpaste, hand and body lotion and sanitary pads.

The Five Tiger Foundation left crowds of children smiling on Saturday, 20 July, when it conducted a dignity pack drive for Mandela Day in Zandspruit.

This newly registered organisation, based in Zandspruit, donated dignity packs to a number of local schools, including Far North High School in Cosmo City and Zandspruit Primary School.

The packs consisted of bath soap, a towel, a toothbrush, toothpaste, hand and body lotion and a pack of sanitary pads.

“About 100 children from the schools benefited from the dignity packs, and five families received grocery packs,” Dumisani Tshabalala, the co-founder of organisation said.

Dumisani also introduced the organisation to the community. “The Foundation operates through crowd funding campaigns consisting of R50 donations, hence the name ‘Five Tiger Foundation’ (a five tiger is a colloquial term for a R50 note). It is a newly registered non-profit entity which aims to help fight the injustices of poverty in the community by donating groceries on a monthly basis to families in need. Our work involves collecting monthly donations and allocating the amount to grocery donations,” he explained.

He added that the dignity pack project, which began during the Mandela Day event, will become part of an ongoing programme to help vulnerable and orphaned children.
