Bicycles damaged by spike trap in Muldersdrift

The incident happened on 21 July, according to Conserv Security, who believe the incident was deliberate as the spikes were concealed and placed on the ground to do damage.

 

Cyclists, especially those who cycle on dirt roads, have been cautioned to be vigilant following the damage sustained by the wheels of two bicycles that rode over concealed spikes in Muldersdrift.

The incident happened on 21 July, according to Conserv Security, who believed the incident was deliberate as the spikes were concealed and placed on the ground, undoubtedly to do damage.

“The victim, who lost two tyres in the incident, explained how at least five sets of spikes were laid along the path at approximately five-metre intervals. The spikes were secured with tent pegs and covered with grass. They were sharpened with the intent to cause damage. Smashed glass was also strewn over the path, together with bricks,” the Facebook report read.

“Fortunately the cyclists managed to stay on their bicycles and not fall onto the next set of spikes.

“Possibly a case of attempt to cause grievous bodily harm could be opened, however the victim will be addressing the issue with the police,” the post continued.

Although the company could not confirm the motive behind these ambush tactics, they encouraged cyclists to be vigilant, and preferably always ride with a friend.

“Keep our helpline/ WhatsApp number (083 488 0400) on your phone for future reference. Let it be known that, despite the irresponsible actions, all tourists are welcome to the area, and we encourage dialogue, common decency and respect,” the post concluded.
