WATCH: Pikitup staff not innocent of wastebin abuse

The CCTV footage comes after residents complained about the blatant abuse of their wheelie bins after being emptied by Pikitup staff.

In light of Pikitup’s suggestion that recyclers or trolley-pushers are guilty of damaging wastebins, and of strewing them all over the roads, the Northsider has obtained CCTV footage that tells a different story.

The CCTV footage comes after residents complained about the blatant abuse of their wheelie bins after being emptied by Pikitup staff.

In the footage provided to the Northsider, some of the workers can be seen manhandling the bins and harshly throwing them on the ground.

After our initial report, residents had their say in our Facebook comments section:

Zelda Felix said, “Our bin doesn’t even have wheels anymore. It’s horrible how they damage the bins”.

Lins Lindsay said, “My bins have big cracks in them and they leave rubbish in the street every week and half the neighbours’ bins in front of my house”.

Ellen Kok said the same happens in Mogale City – they also have bins with broken lids etc.

Pikitup spokesperson, Muzi Mkhwanazi, was provided with a copy of the footage and asked for comment. He said he will be escalating the report to the chief operations officer at Pikitup. He will then investigate further based on the footage and decide if any disciplinary action will be taken against the employees.
