Little chess maestro needs sponsorship for China and India

She was also selected to participate in the 2019 Commonwealth Chess Championships to be held in New Delhi, India from 29 June to 7 July.

Eight-year-old Ofentse Peete, from Charterhouse Primary School, is creating her own waves in the sea of chess.

What is making her achievements more memorable is the fact that this little maestro only learned how to play chess in the past year.

Ofentse was introduced to the sport last year by coach Alessandro Parodi as part of the school’s policy of having all their learners participate in extra-mural activities.

She was also selected to participate in the 2019 Commonwealth Chess Championships to be held in New Delhi, India from 29 June to 7 July.

The Grade 2 learner is also the first chess player at the school to be selected to represent South Africa in the 2019 World Youth Cadets Chess Championships to be held in Weifang, China from 20 August to 2 September.

Impressed coach Parodi said, “It is amazing what she has achieved from just a year of learning how to play chess. She is showing the other players at the school how it is done and I am hoping many will follow in her footsteps”.

Proud mother Lorato Peete said, “I am also amazed by her achievements. At first I wasn’t sure when she indicated her interest in the sport as I did not know that she could dig deep and pull this off. I am happy, because chess also helps her to concentrate”.

Ofentse’s school and parents are appealing to all the sponsors out there to assist with funding in order for the little chess master to be able to participate in the above-mentioned championships.

Community members and businesses that are interested in sponsoring Ofentse are requested to contact her mother on 060 469 5946 or Charterhouse Primary on 011 475 6809.
