Pappa continues to elude rescuers

Pappa has become somewhat of a celebrity ever since he initially went missing on 7 January.

Pappa has been found since initially going missing on 7 January, but looks strong despite a puffy eye while rescuers haven’t been able to capture him.

When Pappa initially went missing, it was believed he was extremely sick and could possibly be infected by a parasitic disease making its way around South Africa, Trichomonas gallinae. Since then it has been proven to not be the case however, even though Pappa still has a very puffy right eye.

For the last two-or-so weeks Pappa has been making the rounds in a host of complexes in Radiokop, constantly travelling from tree-to-tree, from complex-to-complex. Brendan Murray and his group of rescuers from the Owl Rescue Centre along with resident Amanda van Rensburg have been following Pappa wherever he’s gone, trying to capture him to treat his right eye which is still puffy.

According to Amanda, Pappa is still in good nick for an owl of his age despite his puffy eye. “We estimate Pappa is around 16 years old, and he is still looking really good and healthy for an owl his age,” she said. “Brendan said that he is most likely not infected with Trich despite his puffy eye, because of the healthy and good condition the rest of his body is in.”

One of the last spots where Pappa was seen was the top of a palm tree that overlooks the area where his most recent mating partner Lady was found dead. At the time of writing, Pappa had not yet been captured, but efforts to do so continued.
