Drifters end unbeaten season with strong victory

After 20 games, Golden Drifters finished on 96 goals, an average of 4,8 goals per game.

Golden Drifters Academy’s U/15 team rounded off an unbeaten season that saw them claim the MCLFA Stream C Development League title for the third year in a row.

The club was established in 2011. The U/15 team had won the league twice, prior to this year, with their previous league victories coming as U/13 and U/14 teams. The U/15 side is one of the strongest development teams within the Johannesburg North and MCLFA Stream C Development League structures, which they proved by winning 18 of their 20 league games this season.

They managed to secure the title with two games in hand, and went into their final game with 93 goals on the board, hoping to reach the goal of 100 they had set at the start of the season. On paper, they were facing a strong side in the form of Reajah Football Club who had already secured a fourth place finish on the log.

Golden Drifters weren’t fazed by Reajah however, and quickly found themselves two goals ahead thanks to an own goal and a well-taken volley from Steve Dlamini, who bagged his 44th goal of the season with the strike. Golden Drifters held onto their two-goal cushion heading into halftime, still needing five goals if they wanted to reach the 100-goal mark for the season.

Unfortunately for Golden Drifters, they weren’t able to get to 100 goals as they only managed one more goal (courtesy of Steve) in the second half, while also conceding only one. This meant they emerged victorious 3–1, and with a grand total of 96 goals in the league, having only conceded 11 points.

Golden Drifters ended the season on 56 points, having gone unbeaten throughout, winning 18 and drawing two of their 20 matches. Steve also managed to finish as both Golden Drifters’ top scorer for the season, and the league’s golden boot winner, finishing with 45 goals for the league.
