Safety is everyone’s responsibility

CoJ EMS spokesperson, Robert Mulaudzi, shared fire prevention tips with property and business owners.

 

The recent increase in fires at properties across the city has resulted in the City of Johannesburg’s Emergency Management Services (EMS) reiterating a number of safety tips to prevent further incidents.

The EMS spokesperson, Robert Mulaudzi, urged all property and business owners and occupants to adhere to the safety standards of their buildings, regardless of whether they are commercial premises or residential homes.

He advised, “Check your fire extinguishing systems such as smoke detectors, sprinklers, fire hose reel and fire extinguisher canisters are in good working order. These pieces of equipment must be serviced regularly. Residential homes should have an adequate fire extinguisher readily available.

“Ensure all safety signs are clearly displayed in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations. Fire escapes/ exits and stairways must be clear of any obstacles at all times. Fire doors and smoke screens must be properly secured,” he explained.

He further explained that owners must have an evacuation plan in place, and appoint emergency marshals and conduct drill exercises regularly.

He added that flammable substances must be securely stored and comply with safety regulations/ by-laws.

“Do not leave an open flame unattended. Inspect electrical connections and any potential source of fire to avoid accidents,” he cautioned.

“Safety is everyone’s responsibility, let us all do our part to ensure a safer environment,” he encouraged.
