Social media users touched by scuba divers’ tragic deaths

A farewell event has been planned by Scubaversity for this Friday, to pay tribute to their deceased colleagues.

Heartfelt condolences have been pouring onto social media following the tragic deaths of four Roodepoort scuba divers from Scubaversity.

The four divers, Colwin Setzkorn, a PADI Course Director and owner of Scubaversity; Melani Cilliers, Scubaversity manager; and two other Scubaversity members, Marie Snyman and Matthew Baartman, were killed in a head-on collision involving a truck. The incident happened 10km south of Pongola in northern KwaZulu-Natal while they were returning from Mozambique on 22 July.

Social media users found the deaths hard to believe and accept.

A Facebooker named Christo Geyser said, “So sad, may their souls rest in peace and may the Lord provide comfort to the loved ones left behind”.

Another Facebooker, Courtney van Zyl reflected on their lives. “They were amazing diving instructors! I’m am so blessed to have met and experienced diving with such amazing people at Scubaversity Dive club. Rest in peace Colwin, Melani, Marie and Matthew”.

Maryann Lahner and Michele Maibaum also sent their condolence and prayers to the affected families.

In paying tribute to the deceased, Scubaversity stated on its Facebook page that there will be a social farewell event on Friday, 27 July.

It is said that there will be music and fires on the beach. They will talk, laugh and share special moments. “We will remember them and treat the occasion as if they are amongst us, giving them the chance to have the most epic send-off ever. Obviously, we have to do some speeches, so we will be starting at 4pm sharp. Everyone that has been touched by them is welcome,” the post read.
