Welties tennis keeping children active during the holidays

Weltevreden Park Tennis Club held a number of clinics during the winter holidays, and welcomed children to come and hone their tennis skills.

Weltevreden Park Tennis Club welcomed a large number of children to its courts during the winter holidays, to try and keep the children active and off the couch.

The clinic started out small, according to the club’s head coach, Marcel Grobbelaar, but has now grown to accommodate more than 30 aspiring tennis players.

“We’re basically trying to make sure they stay active, instead of lounging around all day,” Marcel said.

In addition to keeping them active, Marcel and his co-workers are trying to get the children involved in something that can be enjoyed by all, regardless of their skill level. “We try to keep the children separated based on their skill level, so that nobody smashes anyone off the court and vice versa,” Marcel explained. “This way, we try to make sure everybody enjoys themselves and no one gets discouraged.”

The clinic entailed a two-hour training session for children of all ages and skill levels, providing the perfect platform and reason to get off the couch.

According to Christian Kruger, one of the youngsters that attended the clinic, the sessions are far more fun than staying at home. “They’re lots of fun, and I really enjoy being able to play tennis with my friends.”

If you would like to take part in the fun at the tennis club, you can contact the club’s secretary, Louise Kruger, on 082 859 7893.
