‘The biggest thing Madiba left behind for me is fortitude’ – Remembering Madiba by his legacy

People remember Madiba for various reasons, but still praise his legacy.

This Mandela Day, we thought it best to remember Madiba for who he was and the immense effect he left behind.

In light of this, we asked a couple of important people in our community just what they believe is Mandela’s legacy, and what he left behind for them in particular. From hope to fortitude to fighting for freedom, Madiba, in the eyes of those below, made a unique difference in each and every one of their lives.

We were able to get hold of Ward 97 Councillor and MMC for Economic Development, Leah Knott, who believes that Nelson Mandela was the “ultimate humanitarian.”

“Mandela was a man that transcended politics. He was a man revered and loved by all for the person he was and the unity he advocated. He was the ultimate humanitarian. He is an example of what every South African should strive to be and someone who can never be replaced and will never be forgotten. I was fortunate enough to grow up in a world where love replaced hate and where a person such as he existed. His contribution to all of our lives is something I will forever be grateful for and will continuously strive to implement wherever I go.”

Next, we asked Caxton Joburg West graphic designer, Craig Michael, what Madiba meant to him.

“Nelson Mandela is a human being I would strive to be like someday. He is known throughout the world as one of the best leaders to ever live. He changed South Africa from being a divided nation to becoming the rainbow nation, living together in peace, interacting with one another, educating us in knowing that we are all equal. He made it his life’s work to fight for freedom. That is one of the things I admire about him. Another is how portrayed himself when he spoke, how he moved, not just the country but the world, with his words.

The level of respect he has is just remarkable. His legacy will live on in each and everyone of us.”

The last two people we spoke to are people who play important roles in the Zandspruit community.
