Are there enough bins on Taylor Road?

The positioning and distance between the bins is the cause of littering in the area.

A Honeydew resident is appealing for extra roadside dustbins on Taylor Road as she claims the shortage results in litter being strewn in the area.

The unhappy resident, Dianne van Neerijnen, said the issue is attributed to the positioning of and distance between the bins.

“This [the littering] is due to the position of the bins on Taylor Road – they are too few and far apart for the pedestrians walking down Taylor Road from the Spar or the Sasol garage to be bothered to use them,” she said.

“We should ideally have more bins, closer together. The same applies to the pavement along Taylor Road/ Paul Kruger Street to During Road (along which the one taxi rank operates),” she proposed.

Van Neerijnen also proposed that the bins be positioned on the side of the road normally used by pedestrians.

“ So, the request of all residents in the area is for the four to six existing concrete litter bins to be placed adjacent to the paths where pedestrians actually walk along Paul Kruger Street to During Road and along Taylor Road,” she explained.

“The state of this open area and the litter on the pavements and paths at this intersection certainly detracts from the value and overall impression of the lovely area that we live in,” Van Neerijnen said.

In response, the MMC for Economic Development and Ward 97 councillor explained how an influx of bins encourages littering. “Experience has proven that when the number of bins is increased it actually encourages littering,” she said.

She added that behaviour needs to change as additional bins place additional strain on the refuse resources currently in place.

She also explained that the bins currently on Taylor Road have been placed there by an advertising company. However, she still encouraged the residents to apply to City Parks for bins to be added in open spaces.

“It would be a good idea, however, to liaise with the property owners on this street to see if this is something everyone agrees with,” she suggested.
