Work done despite poor turnout

Rugby Road, close to the pedestrian bridge in Weltevreden Park was the area of focus for five volunteers including councillor David Brand, who got their hands dirty on the morning of 19 May.

“If five people can clean up a 150-metre island, imagine what 30 people can do,” said Ward 126 councillor, David Brand after a poor turnout at the ward’s A re Sebetseng clean-up.

These were the words of Ward 126 councillor, David Brand, after a poor turnout to the ward’s A Re Sebetseng clean-up.

Rugby Road, close to the pedestrian bridge over the N1, was the area of focus for five volunteers, including Brand, who got their hands dirty on the morning of 19 May.

Speaking about the poor attendance, Brand said, “This (the clean-up) was publicised on Facebook, WhatsApp and the Residents’ Association groups.”

According to Brand, the clean-up would have been impossible if it wasn’t for the help they received from a local tree felling company and a member of another Residents’ Association.

“We had a handful of people, one of whom was not even from our Residents’ Association, but came to help. If it wasn’t for the services of Jonte Kinch and his Tree Felling company, who came along with equipment and staff, and Pikitup which came during the afternoon to collect the rubbish, we would’ve battled,” Brand explained.

He continued to appeal to people to support the clean-up campaigns as this initiative has nothing to do with politics but aims to build communities. “We live in the area, we go to school in the area and we work in the area, why can’t we do projects in the area?” he asked.
