Weltevreden Park Library back to its former self

Ward 126 councillor David Brand joined hands with the residents of the ward to give Weltevreden Park Library the face lift it's been longing for.

The Weltevreden Park Library has been longing for a face-lift for a long time, so David Brand and a few residents from the Ward 126 area tended to the library’s gardens as part of an A Re Sebetseng clean-up on 21 April.

Despite not initially planning to clean it up, David realised that there was a need to do something after receiving complaints from the community about the library.

“We received a number of complaints from the community regarding the library’s condition,” David said. “The complaints seem to have been well-founded, as what we thought would be a quick clean-up, took three hours to do.”

According to David, the head librarian, Sandy Visser, was ecstatic when the group arrived to tidy up the area.

The clean-up went exactly as planned for the team, as they were able to get the gardens back to their former state after they had been left to become overgrown.

Despite receiving the usual strong support from the local resident associations, David feels the community’s involvement left a lot to be desired.

“The turnout is never what we’d like, especially when just about the only people involved are the residents’ associations and people from other areas and communities,” David said.

“It doesn’t help if we host these initiatives and the residents disappoint us by not pitching up. We need every pair of hands we can get to help clean Joburg the way it should be cleaned.”

To David, the clean-ups are more about building a strong community spirit between residents than getting out and tidying up.

“The cleaning of the area is of course really important, but these clean-ups are vital to building up pride within the community,” Brand said. “By working together, the residents generate a sense of pride in what their community looks like. They also build stronger, better relationships with fellow residents.”
