Poorte take back Castle Bowl after 5 successive defeats
Poorte managed to win four of their five games against Randfontein last weekend to snatch back the Castle Bowl after it spent two years in Teine's hands.
For the last two years, Randfontein Rugby Club (Teine) has had a tight grip on the Castle Bowl, the floating trophy that is taken home by the victor in the annual clash between the Roodepoort (Poorte) and Randfontein Rugby Clubs.
However, Teine let their grip on the trophy slip this year, as they suffered defeats in four of their matches against Poorte, with the biggest loss hitting the first team.
The day was kicked off by the U/21 teams at Allen Glen High School, and by the third teams at Ruimsig Stadium.
The U/21 match was undoubtedly the highlight of the day for Teine, as it was the only victory they recorded.
At half-time, the game was deadlocked on a score of 7-all. The deadlock held, at 12-all, until just before the end of the second half.
Then, with less than a minute to go, Deshaun Marshall ran in the match-winning try for Teine as he dotted down in the left-hand corner, giving his side a 19–12 win.
The rest of the day would turn out rather dismal for Teine, as they lost every other match they played.
The Poorte first team did however put up a strong fight in the first half of their match, reaching a score of 12–3.
The first half was not only the more closely contested, it was also the roughest of the two halves. Within the first two minutes, a Teine player was yellow-carded.
But before he could even return to the field of play, both sides were handed a red card for alleged punching. Poorte would run away with the match in the second half, running in six tries to Teine’s one.
Overall, it was a day to forget for the Teine supporters who made the trip to Ruimsig Stadium.
Teine will be looking to redeem themselves when they lock horns with Wits University at the Greenhills Stadium in Randfontein this weekend. Wits’ first team narrowly lost out to Wanderers Rugby Club last week.
