Golfers battle bad weather and good opponents

The full results of the winners will be published in this week’s edition of the Roodepoort Northsider.

The Club Championships is one elite tournament that each member of the Ruimsig Country Club looks forward to every year, and a number of professional golfers also came out to play at the much-anticipated annual golf tournament on 17 and 18 March.

Day 1 of the tournament was marred by a few heavy showers of rain, causing the greens to be slippery and wet and resulting in many frustrated golfers being unable to master their best shots. “The weather was not really pleasing. We went out to the greens a couple of time when it was really pouring down just to make sure that the course did not become flooded. If the grass is flooded, the greens get very soft – and you just can’t play,” said Martin Uys, the golfing director at the club.

Day 2’s weather was much improved – allowing golfers to play their best game on the final day.

Uys shared the purpose of the championships. “The club champs is basically the biggest tournament for the golf club for the year. It’s a two-day event that most players look forward to and it’s the main championships of the year,” he said.

He also explained the different divisions that make up the tournament. “The championships have three divisions: the best division being called ‘A’, followed by ‘B’ and ‘C’. Each division has its own prize winners and tournament winners; however, the ‘A’ division consists of the champions, so the winner is the person who plays best.”

Asked to speculate about the favourites to win the ‘A’ division, Uys said, “We have two youngsters, Keagan and his brother Keelan van Wyk. They play a lot in the amateur scene and in the junior tournament they did very well. We also have Shaun James (the defending champion), who is really good – probably one of the top juniors in the country at the moment, and Steven Johnston, an old boy who is a medium player (over 35). He usually gets selected for the national and international teams and has won the title a couple of times.”

The full results of the winners will be published in this week’s edition of the Roodepoort Northsider.
