King’s School welcomes daddy-daughter bonding
King's School West Rand held its eighth annual daddy-daughter picnic on Saturday, 24 February.
Close to 100 dads and daughters pitched up on the day to have a little bit of time to themselves.
One of the teachers at the King’s School West Rand Primary School and organiser of the function, Surita Kriel, noted the importance of the day for both the dads, and their daughters.
“It can quite often be difficult for dads to connect with their daughters,” she said.
“The day gives the dads a chance to get in touch with their feminine side, while providing them with important time with their daughters.”
There was a whole host of activities the dads and daughters could get up to, with some being vital to the dads, and some to the girls.
In one of the activities, they had the chance to shoot a ‘nerf gun’ at a poster depicting certain stereotypes about girls. These stereotypes were things such as ‘You must have a boyfriend’, ‘You must wear make-up’ and ‘You must be skinny’. The aim of the girls shooting at these stereotypes was to teach them that they don’t need to succumb to society’s ideologies and stereotypes.
Another very special activity was one in which each girl was handed a water-pistol, which they had to fire off at a number of polystyrene cups which had an instruction written on the inside for the dad.
The girls would choose a cup to shoot at, and the dads would have to repeat the reassuring statement on the inside to their daughters.
“I think it’s really important for girls to get rid of the idea that they have to grow up a certain way and dress a certain way,” Surita said.
“These activities gave them a chance to ‘shoot’ as boys would do, and also gave dads the opportunity to remind their daughters how precious and beautiful they are.”
All-in-all, the day was extremely successful, with the bonds between father and daughter left stronger than they were on arrival at the function.
