New soccer league to start at Hillfox 5s

Former Premier Soccer League (PSL) players Tshepo Moloto and Sheldon Lawrence have undertaken at initiative to start an Astro Turf Football League, beginning this month.

Tshepo Moloto and Sheldon Lawrence have been running a soccer clinic for just about a year, and are expanding into a league now.

The clinic started out at Charterhouse School last year, and focused solely on youth development in the sport.

They have now undertaken a contract with the team at the Hillfox 5s set-up, which is situated behind the Hillfox Shopping Centre.

Sheldon, who played for the likes of Maritzburg United and Mpumalanga Black Aces before hanging up his boots three years ago, believes that teaching the children how to play on indoor surfaces is a good way to teach agility and speed.

“The indoor game is a lot faster and is played in less space, so players need to develop agility and quick thinking, which will add an edge to their outdoor game,” Sheldon said.

According to Tshepo, they aim to have a week of the clinic first, to get everyone back into the game.

“We need to get everyone back after the holidays, and I think it’s best to do so with a few sessions before we start the league,” he said.

Tshepo has plied his trade for the likes of Jomo Cosmos, Maritzburg United, Platinum Stars, Moroka Swallows and even spent a season overseas with Vietnamese team XSKT Can Tho FC.

The clinics and leagues that they will be running will be for aspiring soccer players in age groups from U/6 to U/14.

Currently, the cost is R400 per child a month, or R2 800 per team a month.

There are currently 12 teams partaking in the clinics and leagues, but they are aiming to triple this.

“Currently, we are looking to have 36 teams, as there are six fields with two teams on each, so 12 teams and three evenings a week,” Sheldon said.

Days and times are Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 6pm onward.
