Wanted man allegedly fakes mental illness

BCI Security acted on a message from a WhatsApp community group reporting a naked man under the Christiaan De Wet Road bridge on Hendrik Potgieter Road, allegedly exposing himself to motorists.

A man allegedly posing as a mentally challenged patient was discovered to be wanted for various serious crimes after he was removed by authorities after being reported to be committing a public indecency offence close to Clearwater Mall on 25 January.

BCI Security acted on a message from a WhatsApp community group reporting a naked man under the Christiaan De Wet Road bridge on Hendrik Potgieter Road, allegedly exposing himself to motorists.

“A member from our TRT Team, assisted by a K9 member and our Operations Manager went to investigate. Initially, the man was not found by our officers, but when they undertook a search of the area, they found him in the bushes close to Clearwater Mall,” said Gary Jordaan from the company.

Jordaan added that assistance was called for from Honeydew Police Station as the man displayed signs of mental illness and needed to be taken for evaluation as he was deemed a risk to himself and the public.

“Police members arrived and took the man to Honeydew Police Station for his safety,” he explained.

He went to say, “In an attempt to find out the man’s identity they profiled him through the national police system.

“Astonishingly, the man was found to be wanted in several criminal cases including armed robbery. He was arrested and investigations are currently under way.

“It is alleged that he pretended to have a mental disorder to avoid being arrested,” Jordaan concluded.
