Maragon student earns spot in SA U/19 Colts team

Emmanuel Motswiri earned himself a spot in the South African Colts team after outstanding performances at the U/19 Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Cricket Week.

Seventeen-year-old Emmanuel Motswiri, a learner at Maragon Ruimsig High School, started playing cricket when he was about eight or nine years old when he took part in the mini-cricket set-up.

He then began playing competitive cricket at age of 12, and went on to play provincial cricket three times before the dawn of 2018 – twice for the U/15B team, and once for the U/17 side.

He was then selected to represent the Gauteng U/19A team to take part in the annual Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Cricket Week from 17–21 December last year.

According to Emmanuel, it was a little tough at first, but he managed to catch up.

“The week was difficult at the beginning, but I’ve always played an age group above me, so I was able to get used to it.”

After what would turn out to be a successful week, he was selected for the Cricket South Africa (CSA) Colts team, the side second only to the South Africa U/19 team.

He went on to represent the Bizhub Highveld Lions at the CSA Cubs Franchise Week, which acts as the final step before the selection of the side that will play the bi-annual ICC U/19 Cricket World Cup.

He felt his Cubs week went a little better than his Khaya Majola week, saying, “I bowled quite well, better than at the Khaya Majola week”.

Emmanuel further stated that his wish is to one day represent his country. He also feels that the whole point of playing is to enjoy the game.

“I think it’s every cricketer’s dream to represent his or her country, and I most definitely do,” said Emmanuel.

“I also feel that if you don’t enjoy the game, there’s no point in taking part.”
