Eight-year-old maths genius wins gold yet again

Ziva Wolf has yet again proved she is a force to be reckoned with in the world of mathematics.

Mathematics braniac, Ziva took part in the 17th instalment of the Pama Global Abacus and Mental Arithmetic Championships at the luxurious Hilton Hotel in Sandton.

The competition, held on 28 December, welcomed the more than 195 participants from 17 countries taking part in the competition.

The championships followed a format similar to an exam during which participants had to do multiple maths equations, division, multiplication, square roots, cube roots and much more.

In Ziva’s group, group B, 104 children did the six-page exam paper with 160 sums. It had to be completed in 13 minutes, with an additional page acting as a time-breaker.

Championship awards were handed out to the top 20 per cent of competitors, which saw South Africa bag 12 of the 53 awards.

This event was Ziva’s second international competition. She participated in her first in December 2015, when she was only six years old and won a bronze medal. This time round she was able to bag the gold championship award in her category.

Ziva’s grandmother, Desiree Mansfield, is extremely proud of Ziva.

“I am very proud of her as she also hits top marks in every subject at school and excels at everything she does. Her 2017 report was exceptional and outstanding,” Desiree said.

This is the eighth trophy Ziva has won in Mathematics competitions.
