Housebreaking suspect nabbed after long pursuit

The suspect ignored warning shots and kept running while being pursued.

Despite the suspect he was chasing jumping over walls and running into overgrown areas, Beagle Watch supervisor Matimba Ngobeni did not concede defeat. He went after and captured the suspect on Cornelis Street in Fairlands on 6 January.

Ngobeni attended to an alarm signal at a client’s premises where the caretaker confirmed a housebreaking and that the suspect was running down Cornelis Street.

According to Beagle Watch, Ngobeni spotted the suspect and immediately gave chase. The suspect turned into 7th Avenue heading towards the freeway and the pedestrian bridge. Ngobeni did not give up and continued to pursue the suspect on foot. He fired warning shots, which the suspect ignored, forcing the officer to fire at the suspect as he was running into the veld adjacent to the freeway.

The suspect jumped over a wall into a property on 5th Avenue; however, Ngobeni managed to track the suspect down at a substation on 5th Avenue where he told the suspect to surrender. According to Jake Shakung, the general manager of operations at Beagle Watch, the suspect tried to attack Ngobeni with a metal pipe. After several futile warnings to drop the dangerous weapon, he shot the suspect in the leg and arrested him.

Shakung said Ngobeni had to fire the shot because criminals can be dangerous especially when carrying weapons.

The police and Flora Life Emergency Services were dispatched to the scene where the suspect was treated for his wound and handed over to the police. Beagle Watch congratulated Ngobeni for effecting an arrest and helping in the fight against crime.
