Responsible shopping tips

Follow these tips and you don't have to constantly worry about the family's safety during down time.

The school holidays are in full swing and this time of the year is perfect not only for a bit of rest, but much-needed family time.

Whether you are whisking the family off on a holiday trip or catching up on shopping, it is imperative to always practice caution.

Honeydew Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Karen Jacobs advised on the following tips and tricks to keep in mind to avoid harmful situations:

• Put your wallet in an inside coat or the front pants pocket, not a back pocket.

• If you are paying in cash, make sure that you do not take out more than is required.

• Carry your bag around your neck and diagonally across your body. Don’t carry it hanging over one shoulder.

• Never leave valuable possessions in the trolley.

• Do not allow your children to go to a public toilet on their own.

• Hold your smaller children by hand as they may go missing in busy shopping malls.

• Put your shopping bags in the boot of your car when doing shopping.

• Be alert when approached by another person who may be distracting you so their counterpart can steal from you.
