Sewer leak suspected cause of river pollution

The Gauteng Department of Water and Sanitation has been approached for comment.

The management of Ramkiki, a popular country restaurant in Ruimsig, has again cried foul about a sewerage leak into the Wilge River, causing an unbearable smell on their posh property.

The establishment, which lies on the banks of the Wilge River on Peter Road, was hit by the smell early this year. The problem emanated from a sewerage pipe that was leaking into the river upstream. The matter was sorted out after the Northsider approached Joburg Water to intervene.

However, Joe Theron, the owner of Ramkiki, had indicated that they are facing the same crisis again.

The general manager, Eugene Drury said, “The foaming of the river has drastically increased in the last three days – and that points to a problem upstream.”

He added that all their public areas face the river, and the stench is not conducive to business.

“I suspect raw sewage is being dumped directly into the river, hence the smell,” Drury complained.

The Gauteng Department of Water and Sanitation has been approached for comment.
