Mashaba calls for solution in Ruimsig housing matter

CoJ Mayor Herman Mashaba looks into the Plot 323 housing issue.

The Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Herman Mashaba, has called on Provincial Government to come up with a solution for the people living on Plot 323 in Ruimsig.

Mashaba visited the plot with the MMC for Public Safety, Michael Sun, and Economic Development councillor, Leah Knott, on 11 October, following the devastating storm and tornado which left many residents destitute.

“I’m calling on Provincial Government to help with the permanent relocation and relief of these residents who are seemingly forgotten,” Mashaba appealed in a Tweet.

“The people here were moved from a farm and had to survive yesterday [the violent storm/tornado] in tents,” he said.

“These people had lived at their previous place for about 20 years before being evicted and placed here by Gauteng Province,” Mashaba explained.

The officials served hot soup and bread to affected residents in Ruimsig after assessing the damage in Zandspruit informal settlement in an effort to provide some relief to the displaced residents.

It’s been over eight months since the eviction of the residents from the farm where they lived to Plot 323. They were evicted by the Red Ants early this year and were left without shelter for several days.

Following their move, which was organised by the Gauteng Department of Human Settlement, to Plot 323 on Hoeveld Road, the residents have been waiting for a solution to their problem.

Lefty Khuselo, one of the residents cried out to Northsider, saying that they were not coping with the current arrangement and appealing for a speedy solution.
