Slain security officer saluted in heroes’ tribute

Security companies came out in numbers to pay their respects to one of their own.

A moment of silence was observed by many security companies on 6 September to show respect for a slain Apcan Security officer who died in the line of duty on 2 September.

The tribute to the officer, Sabelo Kanyane, was held between Fredenharry and Hendrik Potgieter Roads. As a result the area was packed with a variety of marked security and Community Policing Forum vehicles.

Kanyane was shot multiple times while responding to an armed business robbery incident with his colleague, Mandla Masimango, who was also wounded and is currently fighting for his life in hospital.

The robbery happened at Blue Liquor Store on CR Swart Road. The business owner, Duncan du Plessis, was also killed.

Due to the seriousness of this incident and the existing risks in this industry, Rudi Holtzhausen, the operations manager at BCI Security, decided to call upon all security companies in the West Rand to come out in numbers and salute Kanyane and the other officers who have passed away previously, while also raising awareness.

A sorrowful Holtzhausen said, “It’s not just police officers who die out there.”

He added that the security companies are the front line and in most incidents are the first be at the crime.

Apcan Security general manager ,Gerhard Oberholzer, told Northsider that although they are rival companies, they all understand the nature of the industry. He also thanked his competitors and the community for supporting them during this tragic period.

The Honeydew CPF also extended its condolences to those affected by the tragedies.
