Nightmare pothole causes damage to the tune of R4 700

A pothole on Constantia Drive caused R4 700 worth of damage to a local resident's vehicle.

Penny Ellis has been waiting to be compensated for pothole damage to her vehicle since April.

While driving along Constantia Drive on the morning of 16 March, Ellis hit a pothole which punctured both the tyres on the right-hand side of her car. She said there were sharp pieces of tar in the pothole that burst the tyres. Fortunately she made it safely to a tyre dealership, but repairs to both tyres and rims cost her R4 700.

At first she was not going to submit a claim for the damage, but since it was not her fault (the pothole was in shade and she did not see it), she later sent a claim to the Joburg Road Agency (JRA).

Since then she has had no feedback from the JRA, nor does she have a reference number for her claim. She turned to the ward councillor for help but Ward 89 councillor, Amelia Bester, said she does not deal with pothole claims.

Marketing and communications operations manager of Johannesburg Roads Agency, Bertha Peters-Scheepers, said the matter had been taken to their legal department.

To claim for pothole damage, a claim form, obtainable on the JRA website, must be completed and the following documents should be attached:

  • Police affidavit
  • Copy of claimant’s driver’s licence
  • Vehicle registration documents
  • Copy of driver’s identity document
  • Photos of the damage to the car
  • Three quotations or an invoice for the repairs
  • Letter from your insurance company confirming that the claim was not logged to your own insurance, or an affidavit of non-insurance
  • Doctor’s report if there is personal injury

The claim form should be emailed with all the additional documents to claims@jra.org.za. The JRA is meant to acknowledge receipt of the claim within three working days and supply a reference number via email or telephone.
