Radiokop couple conquers the South African Duathlon Championships in KZN

Radiokop – local couple hopes to compete at the World Duathlon Championship after conquering the local competition in KZN.

A Radiokop cycling couple, Hanno and Nicola Mattheus are crossing their fingers for an international selection after pulling off an impressive finish at this year’s South African Duathlon Championships held at Midmar Dam in Howick, KwaZulu-Natal on 2 July.

The pair, representing Central Gauteng Triathlon, completed the race, which consisted of an exhausting 10km leg race and 40km of cycling, in less than three hours.

Hanno crossed the finish line in exactly 02:35:52 and was placed in seventh position in his age category, while Nicola clinched the first position in 02:44:58 in her age category.

The couple told Roodepoort Northsider that they were waiting to find out if they met the requirements to compete at the World Duathlon Championships in Finland next year.

The Central Gauteng board is expected to release the results soon.

“The run course was hilly with almost no flats and a very strong headwind. For the 10km rum we had to do two laps of 5km each.

“The bike course was four laps of 10km with an awesome 4km climb before we turned around for a thrilling fast downhill. The course suited us as we had a lot of hill training in the Cradle of Humankind and running all the ups and downs in Radiokop and Wilgeheuwel,” Nicola said.

She added that they both improved their running times and had an amazing time with their parents and friends supporting them during the event.
