City Power employee risks life for Glover Street community

A City Power employee suffered serious injury in an explosion at an electrical box.

A 63-year-old City Power employee sustained serious injuries after an alleged electrical explosion in Glover Street.

Ineke van Huyssteen, an ER24 spokesperson, said it is believed the man was doing maintenance work on one of the electrical boxes when it exploded on 9 July. When ER24 paramedics arrived on scene at 8am, the man was already being treated by another ambulance service. The man needed advanced life support and was transported to a nearby hospital.

Local resident, Pat Grunwald, said she believes the biggest problem with the power supply in the area is cable theft.

“I don’t think the thieves realise how much damage they do when they steal the cables. It makes me so angry,” she added.

Pat said the workers from City Power are fantastic and always come to the aid of their community, which frequently suffers power outages. She is currently collecting funds to buy a cake or flowers for the man as a thank you for risking his life for the community.
