A City of Johannesburg official, who is being held at Sandton Police Station after allegedly demanding a bribe of R5 000 from a service provider, will appear in court soon.
The suspect allegedly demanded the money from a service provider for compensation after securing them a tender for providing archiving services for the City’s libraries.
This is according to Executive Mayor of Johannesburg, Herman Mashaba, who said the tender was valued at R148 500.
The suspect’s arrest on 5 May came after the matter was reported and a case opened with the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation.
“The investigation, which involved an authorised entrapment exercise by the Hawks, resulted in the suspect unlawfully accepting the amount of R5 000 which they had demanded from the supplier,” Mashaba said.
The City’s Anti-Corruption Unit arrested an alleged property valuer in January and a total of 71 employees from seven different licensing departments across the City have been charged after more than R15 million in fraud was uncovered.
In the State of the City Address on 3 May, Mashaba revealed that R10 billion had been lost to corruption during the previous administration with more than 300 cases currently under investigation.
