Ruimsig with a strong drive

RUIMSIG – Social tennis at Ruimsig Country Club has a great vibe.

Social tennis at the Ruimsig Country Club is on the front foot.

In fact, it is thriving beyond capacity.

Ellaine Wells, captain of the club’s tennis section, explained that although the club’s only competitive events included the annual club championships and the odd round-robin tournament, the social days were extremely popular.

On Tuesday mornings, Wednesday nights and Saturday afternoons, players pour onto the three courts for mixed doubles sets and some teams have to wait on the sidelines for others to finish so they can take their turn.

At other times during the week, members bring their friends along for one-off bouts on the court, and groups also hire the courts for tennis sessions.

“I guess we have a great social atmosphere,” Wells speculated about the success. “Even though we do not have many youngsters, we still have lots of members.”

For Hannetjie Small, what she loves most about the social tennis is that although it is mildly competitive, it does not get too serious. “Everybody is on the same level, and we are all friends and have fun. We do not exclude anyone,” she said.

Often, after these sessions, the players will go to the country club’s restaurant and eat pizza together, or visit the Alice Art Gallery for coffee.

“Everybody is very friendly here and you always know you will have a good game,” said Carey Needham-Clark.

Wells admitted that it would be difficult to welcome many new members to the club at the moment, and appealed to anyone willing to help sponsor another court, to do so, so more players would be able to play.
