Hillfox heist – R180 000 stolen

WELTEVREDEN PARK — Police are investigating a case of armed robbery outside Food Lovers Market.

A cash-in-transit heist, the second in five months, occurred at the Hillfox Value Centre on the morning of 4 March.

Bystanders said a group of armed suspects approached a cash-in-transit employee who had collected money and was carrying it to the stationary van outside Food Lover’s Market.

A witness, Andz Frylinck was in the store when it happened. “We were in the store when the robbery happened. The staff were screaming and running to safety [and] the customers all headed for the front door. This was not a nice experience to witness [sic],” she said in a comment on the Roodepoort Northsider’s Facebook page.

The management of Food Lover’s Market did not want to comment on the matter.

Despite unconfirmed reports on Twitter, spokesperson Captain Balan Muthan said three suspects, two of whom were armed, stole and got away with R180 000.

“We have a specialised unit that investigates this sort of crime. We will find the loopholes the suspects used to commit this crime at the centre,” he said.

This is the second heist outside the Food Lover’s Market since October last year. Roodepoort Northsider reported last year that three suspects, one of whom was carrying a firearm, robbed the cash-in-transit van that was en route to the store.
