If you get lost while hiking…

JOBURG – When you feel like you have been going in a circle three times when hiking, there are a few things you should remember to do.

After a 12-year-old Greymont boy got lost at the Magaliesburg Mountains on 15 October, one of the rescue teams has now offered tips to the public when hiking or when getting lost during a hike.

Mountain Club of South Africa Search and Rescue offered the following tips:

  •  Before going on a hike, let someone know where you are going and when you should be expected back.
  •  Take a fully charged cellphone, a whistle and a headlamp with you.
  • If you become lost, try to re-orientate yourself, but stay in the immediate area. Use whatever you have to make yourself and your location visible. But remember to stay in one place and rather find shelter. By staying in one place, you will be found faster and won’t be injured in a fall.
  • Remember that there are probably a lot of people looking for you, so try and remain calm until they find you.

In a mountain rescue emergency, call the Mountain Club of South Africa Search and Rescue unit.
