UPDATE: Wits bus petrol bombed as occupants scramble for exit

BRAAMFONTEIN Angry protesting students set local police van alight

A Wits University bus carrying students was set alight with a petrol bomb in Braamfontein last night (25 October), while students were still inside.

Fortunately, all the occupants managed to escape the flames and no one was injured.

Gauteng Police spokesperson Kay Makhubela said that police have video footage of the incident, and they expect arrests will follow.

This was the same night a police van and Rea Vaya bus were also set alight, allegedly by #FeesMustFall protestors.

A Parkview police van was set alight on the evening of 25 October allegedly by protesters from the #FeesMustFall movement.

The protesters were aggravated by the heavy police presence in the vicinity of a Wits Residence next to Wits Museum. The van was parked outside the residence when it was set alight. Following that the police went into the residence and started shooting.

About the same time a Reya Vaya bus has also been set alight in Braamfontein on Rissik street.

Johannesburg Metro Police Department spokesperson Wayne Minnaar said the roads between Jorissen Street and Ameshoff Street had been closed since last night and police are on the scene. It is unclear when they will be re-opened.

Rea Vaya bus was also set alight in Braamfontein.

It is still unclear if the three incidents are linked together.
