Local golfer tees-up for amateur championship

HONEYDEW – Golfer, Tyrone Armist's short-term goal is to be selected for the Gauteng Central Interprovincial team.

Local amateur golfer, Tyrone Armist will represent South Africa in the 22nd World Amateur Golfers Championship final in Durban.

The Honeydew resident fought his way through the South African qualifier and won his national blazer at the tournament’s final. He will compete against golfers from about 30 countries from 22 to 29 October.

Armist enjoys the freedom of being on the golf course as well as playing on different golf courses. “In South Africa, we are spoiled for choice and golf is such a great character-builder,” he said.

He hopes that Team SA will win the overall team event and show the beautiful golf courses and South African culture to the rest of the world. “I hope that all participating countries have a wonderful event regardless of how each team does, and I would definitely want to win my division,” he said. “I hope each player enjoys themselves under the pressure and takes in South Africa and all we have to offer, golf is just a sport, but the friends and memories we make along the way stay with us forever.”

Armist said his short-term goals were to make the Gauteng Central amateur golf team and subsequently the Springbok amateur side one day.

World Amateur Golfers Championship was founded by the late Sven Tumba in 1995, and along with the World Amateur Golfers Invitational, have brought amateur golfers together from all over the world. The tournament has since grown into the largest amateur golf championship.

The tournament begins as a national championship and the winners from five handicap flights become national champions and represent their national team and individually within their flights.
