WELTEVREDEN PARK – Ward 126 councillor, David Brand and the Roodepoort Northsider took a trip to the Weltevreden Park Clinic to inform residents about its free health-care service and how it works.

The clinic is open from Mondays to Fridays from 7.30am to 4pm to anybody who requires health services. Brand said patients need only give their name, date of birth and home address for tracing purposes. Even non-South African residents can go to the clinic because the facility is not allowed to discriminate.

He added that the clinic specialised in family planning, chronic diseases such as asthma, diabetes, hypertension, epilepsy, HIV, HIV testing and counselling. The clinic is also allowed to dispense certain medication, but only to a certain level. If patients require a higher level medication, they will be referred to a hospital. Brand said the clinic was also authorised to treat trauma. “The clinic will stabilise the patient and then call ambulance services.”

The clinic is very busy with about 70 to 80 patients being seen on a slow day, and up to 150 patients on a busier one. About 2 000 patients are seen per month.

Brand said the clinic was especially suited for post-natal services as it was more convenient to visit the clinic than a hospital in the city. Brand concluded by appealing to patients visiting the clinic to come early in the morning.
