Launch of new terminal celebrated

LANSERIA - People of aviation royalty invited to have an exclusive tour of Lanseria International Airport's newly expanded international terminal building.

Cream of the crop airlines, stakeholders and aviation specialists were invited to a very special networking breakfast at Lanseria International Airport for the official launch of the almost-complete revamped international terminal.

Attendees of the breakfast on 20 September had the opportunity to be some of the first people to see the new building with a special tour. As is, the current international terminal can accommodate 70 people, but after expansions, the terminal will accommodate approximately 186 people at a time. The new terminal building also boasts a brand-new baggage carousel.

CEO of Lanseria International Airport, Rampa Rammopo thanked everyone for attending the breakfast and mentioned that currently, the airline accommodates Kulula, Mango and recently welcomed, FlySAfair. Rammopo gave a presentation to inform people about future developments as well as developments that are currently underway.

According to Rammopo the catchment area of Lanseria is about 11 million people, which means, Lanseria would need to be expanded to be able to accommodate the growing demand. “Lanseria handles more aircraft movements, take-offs and landings per year than any other airport in Africa,” he said.

Apart from the future, Rammopo also shared a bit of the history of Lanseria that is not known to many people. Lanseria was opened in 1974 and owned by the Roodepoort and Krugersdorp municipalities. In 1991, Lanseria was bought by private investors, and private owners then took over in 2013.

The new terminal is almost complete and just has a few final details to finish up.

Details: Lanseria International Airport 011 367 0300.
