Monash doc stands up for women

RUIMSIG – Dr Natasha Khamisa from Monash SA believes in the importance of education.

Monash South Africa is known for their well-rounded academics, but Dr Natasha Khamisa from Radiokop, a senior lecturer in public health, stands out with her undeniable passion for education and her fight against inequality and inequity.

Originally from Kenya, Khamisa went to the United States to study nursing in 2002 and moved to South Africa in 2005 to be closer to home and to study psychology at Monash. In 2012, Khamisa received her PHD at Monash and today she is a senior lecturer there.

“I am so lucky. Without education, I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to be where I am,” she said.

“Like Nelson Mandela said, ‘Education is the most important weapon which you can use to change the world’.”

Khamisa said she strongly believes all children should be in school and complete their education. “Children who are not in school are severely disadvantaged, as this is the place where they learn valuable decision-making skills.”

She added that education in South Africa can definitely improve. Khamisa referred to the recent violent outbreaks at universities in South Africa. “Some are more accessible than others. They need to look at student’s needs.”

Khamisa added that women who are educated will put their children in school as they will know the importance of it. She explained that women in some African and Asian countries that aren’t allowed an education, can’t make decisions about the prevention of Aids, risk factors, violence and maternal health.

“I grew up Muslim and I was fortunate to have parents who promoted and welcomed an education,” she said.

Khamisa concluded that she would want to see the strengthening of education and the health sector in the country and the implementation of equal policies and practices.
