Law enforcers raid school

ALLEN'S NEK – Police and a security company raided a school to help eradicate the problem of drugs.

Cigarettes, alcohol, dagga and condoms were among the items confiscated by Metro police and Beagle Watch security company during a raid at Allen Glen High School on 9 September.

For about two hours, police searched school pupils, their bags and their lockers in an effort to eradicate the problem of drugs and illegal weapons in the school.

The school wrote a letter to the police seeking help to solve the problem after a pupil was stabbed in the school’s bathroom on 10 August. The School Governing Body (SGB) chairperson, Warren Mackrill, said the raid was to ensure that the school was a safe learning environment. “This is our effort to ensure that the school is conducive for learning,” he said.

SGB safety and security sub-committee chairperson, Castro Mafale added that the raid was part of their proactive measures to prevent criminal incidents. “This is our first raid, but we will regularly conduct this operation to clean the school… we need to be active,” he said.

Pupils whose items were confiscated are expected to appear before the school’s disciplinary hearing with their parents. “Parents of these children will be called in and we will take it from there,” he concluded.

The Metro police Ward 126 commander, Ayanda Mafongosi advised that a permanent guard to search pupils would help solve the problem.
