Tau commended and criticised after End of Term report

JOBURG – It was a clash of opinions by the ANC and DA after City of Johannesburg Mayor Parks Tau delivered his End of Term report.

While the ANC congratulated Mayor Parks Tau on the innovative work he and his team continue to do, as mentioned in Tau’s End of Term report on 6 July, the DA instead said the report was void of a clear purpose and a vision to take the City of Johannesburg forward.

The ANC Gauteng spokesperson Motalatale Modiba said the party congratulated Tau for ensuring that the lives of Joburg residents are improved daily. He highlighted that the ANC-led city has increased infrastructure investment from R3,6 billion to R100 billion in 10 years.

“[The City] is also the least reliant on national government grants,” he said.

The DA , however, have a different view.

Herman Mashaba, the DA’s mayoral candidate for the City believes “Tau is in complete denial of the jobs bloodbath occurring in Joburg”.

“Almost one in three Joburg residents do not have jobs. At least 869 000 people are unemployed, which is a rate of 31 percent,” he said.

Mashaba has, during his campaign, put the spotlight on the City’s employment rate, saying that in the last five years the unemployment rate has increased by over 3 percent.

He further emphasised “what went wrong in the last term”, when he mentioned there were more than 300 power outages faced by residents each month.

The local government elections, which is arguably the most contested since 1994, is three weeks away on 3 August.
