Smash and grabs are on the rise

HONEYDEW - General sector 2 CPF meeting provide some positive feedback.

The Honeydew Sector 2 CPF hosted their general meeting at the Honeydew Police Station on 26 May.

Members of the CPF, the Metro Police for ward 89 and ward 126, security companies from the area and members of the various resident associations attended the meeting to address various issues in sector 2.

Sector 2 chairman, John Baisley opened the meeting. Honeydew Police station commander, Brigadier Wayne Sirkhout addressed issues from previous meetings. He said the statistics show that crime has gone down from the previous meeting. He added that robberies at homes went down and that in the week of the meeting no robberies were reported.

He added, however, that motor vehicle theft is a major problem. The Honeydew Police said people should not leave valuable items in cars, where it can be seen as this makes the car a target. Jon Rosenberg, Honeydew CPF public relations officer said that he has regular meetings with Sirkhout to try and combat robberies in the Sector 2 area.

Rosenberg referred to a previous article about increased police visibility in the area. A security guard warned attendees that “intercom break-ins” are on the rise. He explained that criminals press the intercoms and if someone does not answer they try to break in.

Members of the meeting also warned residents that incidents of smash and grabs are on the rise at the 14th Avenue offramp.
