Young poets take centre stage

RADIOKOP – Junior Colleges Snuggles holds a poetry eisteddfod to introduce the children to public speaking.

The pupils of Junior College Snuggles made their parents proud in an annual poetry eisteddfod, where they were awarded gold or silver certificates for their performance.

From age groups three to six years, each group had a poem to recite in front of an audience of parents and adjudicators, Liz Steenkamp and Kirstin Taylor, from Snuggles’ sister schools.

The poems varied in difficulty in accordance with the age group and varied in topic from bath time, freckles, magic shows, manners and zebras and their shenanigans. “You can see how they improve as they move up in the age groups. They get more confident as they get older,” said Megan Hunt, principal of Junior College Snuggles.

Between the age groups, the children performed a group song and were awarded certificates based on their performance in the eisteddfod. The purpose of the eisteddfod is to introduce children to public speaking and boost their confidence in this regard.

Adjudicator, Liz Steenkamp described the recitals as confident, comical and very well done, as many young poets made the audience laugh by adding gestures to their poems.

“I think they all did very well. It is hard for them to get up there and it is also difficult for us to judge our own children’s performances as we love all of them and would be biased in the eisteddfod,” Hunt added.
