A gallop a day to help those who need it

RUIMSIG – Sarda Gauteng introduces their ponies whose mission it is to help others.

South African Riding for the Disabled Association (Sarda) Gauteng has come to be a place of solace for those who are disabled. Children and adults alike enjoy a time of calm and ease on the back of a very reliable friend.

The organisation introduced the string of ponies that keeps things moving.

Sarda Gauteng boasts an array of very noble ponies who have helped many through the years. Chairperson of Sarda Gauteng, Katrina Evans said that the role ponies play is a crucial one. Through interaction with the ponies, people have the opportunity to be present and in the moment without being distracted by other factors.

Two of Sarda Gauteng’s oldest helpers are Dicky and Thomas. These two were both born in the ’80s and still have the vigour to help those who need it the most. Dicky is said to be very patient, as he allows riders to find their way onto him without rush. His big heart and hearty appetite keep visitors smiling.

“Ponies help with the therapy as they mimic the motion of walking for those who struggle to walk,” said Evans. Dicky’s patience makes it easier for small riders to feel confident and comfortable on the lovable animal.

Thomas is described as being reliable and his calm temperament makes him great for the autistic. He has seen many years at Sarda Gauteng, and his passion is what is said to fuel him.

The hopeless romantics of the bunch are Sherry and Sunny who have imprinted onto each other. Where one is, the other is sure to follow. Sherry works very well with little riders who have cerebral palsy, while Sunny is great with those mentally and physically challenged.

Evans concluded that the ponies at Sarda are either donated or bought. “We are very careful and particular about the horses we have,” said Evans.
